The Transition to College: A Parent’s Perspective

The Transition to College: A Parent’s Perspective

“As parents, seeing Bethany evolve from someone who was once quite anxious, into a young woman thriving in a more mature learning environment meant everything to us.”

Watching your child take the next big step from school to college can feel both exciting and overwhelming.

We spoke with proud Killay parents, Helen and James Nicholas, whose daughter Bethany completed her A Levels at Gower College Swansea in 2024. Today, she’s thriving as a Medicine student at Cardiff University.

If your child is preparing to make that same transition this September, here’s what you can expect—from the early nerves to the lasting rewards.

What made Gower College Swansea stand out from other local colleges or sixth forms?

The open evening was a real turning point. Bethany was able to have in-depth conversations with staff about the courses and opportunities on offer. What really stood out was how personalised and ambitious the support was, it felt a step above what was available at local sixth forms. It sparked even more enthusiasm in Bethany for the subjects she loved, and we could see she was already imagining her future there. The science facilities in particular were exceptional, especially the lab, which felt like the perfect environment for Bethany, who has always dreamed of studying Medicine at university. We left that evening feeling excited and reassured that Gower College Swansea was the right place for her.

How did you feel when Bethany first started at Gower College Swansea?

We knew the transition from school to college would be a big step, but we were just as excited as Bethany was. She had such a positive attitude from day one, which really put our minds at ease. While I, [Helen, mum] never went to college myself, my husband did, so he understood the many benefits that come with that experience. Of course, as a parent, there's always a bit of nervousness, but Bethany settled quickly—and seeing her happy made us feel confident and proud.

How did you feel once Bethany had settled into college life?

It was a huge relief and a proud moment. Moving from a nearby secondary school to traveling further, managing her own schedule, and taking full responsibility for her learning is a big leap for any teenager. But Bethany embraced the independence. Within the first few months, she was thriving, getting herself up, onto the bus, attending all her lectures, and settling into a routine. It was wonderful to see her growing into a confident young adult who was excited about her studies and her day-to-day experiences.

What kind of care and support stood out at Gower College Swansea?

The support she received through the GCS Honours Programme and the MDV (medics, dentists and vets) preparation stream was outstanding. From mock interviews to tailored feedback and mentoring, the level of care was exceptional. It went far beyond academic help. It gave her the confidence and self-belief she needed. She’d always been interested in medicine, but the guidance from staff who truly understood what universities were looking for made all the difference. As parents, seeing her evolve from someone who was once quite anxious into a young woman thriving in a more mature learning environment meant everything to us. That growth has stayed with her into university, and it all started at Gower College Swansea.

Was there a standout moment during Bethany’s time at Gower College Swansea?

Absolutely—when she didn’t achieve the results she was hoping for at the end of her first year. It could have been a major setback, but the team at the College stepped in with a tailored action plan and unwavering support. That encouragement helped her refocus, and she went on to achieve excellent results in her second year. It was a defining moment of resilience, and we’ll always be grateful for the role the College played in helping her turn things around.

What advice would you give to parents who feel nervous about their child moving from school to college?

It’s completely normal to feel anxious; after all, it’s a big step. But we would say that somewhere like Gower College Swansea makes that transition much smoother. It’s the perfect bridge between school and university. It encourages independence, new friendships, and real responsibility. I [James, dad] had to go to college myself because my school didn’t have a sixth form, and it absolutely prepared me for university. For Bethany, it was the same. It gave her the space to grow both personally and academically.
