A group of our International students enjoyed an exciting trip to one of Britain’s most appealing cities.

They visited the Roman Baths and spent time at the award-winning Bath Christmas Market.

The group also had time to browse the artisan goods and tuck in to some delicious street food.

Students meet iconic artist on visit to Swansea

Staff and students from Gower College Swansea jumped at the chance to meet with iconic pop artist Sir Peter Blake when he visited Swansea at the weekend.

The first stop was the Glynn Vivian Art Gallery for a celebration of Blake’s illustrations for Dylan Thomas’ Under Milk Wood and the launch of an ‘open exhibition’ for Swansea residents (which included work by College lecturer Phil Jacobs).

Teacher training programme a success

Teacher training programme a success

Gower College Swansea recently welcomed teachers from Zhuzhou, Hunan, China to participate in a short teacher training programme.

Our Chinese guests observed a range of different A Level classes and taught sessions and also participated in a cultural exchange event, with some of our current Chinese students performing in the role of interpreters.

The International team would sincerely like to thank everybody who helped with the programme and we look forward to welcoming more Chinese teachers in the New Year.

Festive fun

International students had a great time getting into the festive spirit at Swansea’s Waterfront Winterland.

The evening started off with an ice skating session followed by all the fun of the fairground.

It was wonderful to see our students relaxing together before they break up for their Christmas holidays.

College launches Lego Education Innovation Suite

The doors have officially opened at Gower College Swansea’s brand new Lego Education Innovation Suite.

The only educational suite of its kind in the local area, this facility will be used by students, school pupils and employers to enhance their digital skills using Lego.

Top marks for our International mathematicians

Top marks for our International mathematicians

Gower College Swansea recently hosted a regional heat for the Senior Team Mathematics Challenge, a competition coordinated by the United Kingdom Maths Trust and sponsored by Rolls Royce.

Over 1200 teams took part this year and International students Jonas, Faye, Jasmine and Tony, who are all from China, secured first place in their heat.

This is the second consecutive year that our international students have won the regional championship. They will now proceed to the national finals in London next February.

A great performance and result all round!

Gower College Swansea has marked White Ribbon Day by launching a brand new domestic abuse policy.

Domestic abuse is a largely hidden crime as it tends to occurs at home and is very often not reported. Yet, on average, two people are killed by their partner or former partner every week in England and Wales* and, again on average, the police in England and Wales receive over 100 calls relating to domestic abuse every hour**

Winning photographs lead to prizes

Winning photographs lead to prizes

Two ILS students from Gower College Swansea have scooped prizes in a photography competition organised by Learning Disability Wales

Sophie Maddick and Jon-Luc Howells are on the Study Preparation 2 course at the Tycoch Campus. Digital photography is among the subjects they study and the winning photographs were taken during a class visit to Langland Bay with lecturer Leah Millinship.

The competition – which had a theme of ‘All our Futures; doing things differently for a better future' – attracted entries from all over Wales.

Table tennis success for International student

Table tennis success for International student

Congratulations to International student Jarret-Yuzhe Zhang on winning the Welsh Colleges Table Tennis Championship.

Jarret, who is from Singapore, scooped first place by defeating the reigning champion - and fellow GCS student - Jacob Young.

The two, who are good friends and often practice together, will go on to represent Wales in the National Championships next April.

When congratulated, Jarret said he felt really proud to have won and to hold up a Welsh flag.

Well we’re all very proud of you too Jarret – well done!
