College retains Gold award for wellbeing initiatives

Gower College Swansea has had its Gold award in Corporate Health Standards reaccredited for a fourth year.

Following a recent Enhanced Status Check carried out by Healthy Working Wales, the College was commended for improving and increasing its award-winning wellbeing provision for staff.

Among the many initiatives the College was praised for were:

Two new appointments of a dedicated fitness coach and wellbeing adviser who have both initiated many new activities for staff, including an exercise referral system that assists individuals with long term health issues.

College hosts Welsh Language Music Day

Gower College Swansea’s campuses were full to the brim when it celebrated Welsh Language Music Day – a national day established to celebrate modern Welsh language music.

A joint project between the College, Menter Abertawe and Welsh Government meant a variety of Welsh artists Mellt, Mali Haf, Dafydd Mills, Mei Gwynedd and Parisa Fouladi took to our stages on the Tycoch, Gorseinon and Llwyn y Bryn campuses.

The aim of the day was to raise awareness amongst our students of the variety in Welsh music.

Creative skills under the spotlight for students

Students on a range of creative and visual arts courses at Gower College Swansea had a fantastic opportunity to meet with employers and university lecturers during the first ever Design 48 showcase, which was held at the Gorseinon and Llwyn y Bryn campuses.

The idea behind Design 48 was developed by the College in partnership with Rachael Wheatley of Waters Creative.

International Study Visit to Cyprus

Gower College Swansea Enterprise Champion, Claire Reid, is heading to Cyprus next month as part of an international study, looking at entrepreneurial skills in young people.

The trip, which is organised by the British Council, will take place over five days and comprises of teachers and lecturers from a variety of educational settings from all over the UK. They will be visiting schools, non-government organisations and businesses in the Nicosia region.

Menopause training vest raises awareness of symptoms

Staff and students at Gower College Swansea were encouraged to get a little hot under the collar when they had an opportunity to try out a Menovest TM

The Menovest TM is a menopause training tool, developed by Over The Bloody Moon, that has been specially designed by Thread Design to replicate the sensations a person feels when having a so-called menopausal ‘hot flush’.

College sponsors Child of Wales award

Gower College Swansea is extremely proud to once again sponsor the Outstanding Charity category at the forthcoming 2023 Child of Wales Awards. 

Director of Skills and Business Development Paul Kift and Head of GCS Training Bruce Fellowes recently attended a special sponsors’ lunch in preparation for the event, which is taking place on 24 March at the Mercure Holland House Hotel, Cardiff. 

This is a wonderful event that recognises the efforts and achievements of courageous children, their families and the charities that support them.

Lord Chief Justice offers local learners a chance to hear from judges

The most senior judge in England and Wales today visited Gower College Swansea. He was there to give the students the chance to hear about the work of judges, the justice system and the rule of law.

Lord Burnett of Maldon, the Lord Chief Justice of England & Wales visited the College as part of the school’s engagement programme that judges are involved in across the country.

Mari Lwyd

Mari Lwyd brought to life at Gower College Swansea

The 17th-century Welsh cultural celebration took place at our Llwyn y Bryn, Tycoch and Gorseinon campuses, as a flash-performance of the Mari Lwyd horse made its way through the sites.   

Mari Lwyd (Y Fari Lwyd in Welsh meaning Old Grey Mare), is traditionally a New Year celebration to pass the marking of the dark days of winter and welcome the spring. Once celebrated across Wales, it’s now a tradition associated with south and south-east of the country.
