Overview

This course is perfect if you are interested in developing your own Rugby Union and Rugby League skills and performance, alongside the study of coaching and training.

It comprises the Extended Certificate (Year 1) which converts to the National Extended Diploma (in Year 2), ensuring learners achieve a three A Level equivalent qualification whilst putting an emphasis on their own rugby performance and progression.

You will gain a valuable insight into coaching and training techniques for a range of rugby populations, from young children to elite professional players.

You will develop practical skills through a range of local industry based placements and educational visits.

Having close, working relationships with both the WRU and the Ospreys, along with being a designated Wales Rugby League Development Academy with close links to Super League Side Salford City Red Devils, we aim to provide students with both a clear academic pathway alongside an elite player pathway.

You will study a range of mandatory subject specific units:

Example units:

  • Applied anatomy and physiology for professional performance
  • Careers in the sport and active leisure industry
  • Health, wellbeing and sport
  • Professional sports performer
  • Research project in sport
  • Nutrition for physical performance
  • Psychology for professional sports performance.

Key information

Five GCSE’s grade C or above, or Level 2 in Sport or Preparation for Public Services (Merit Profile).

Minimum grade C in English, maths grade C is desirable.

There will be a requirement to demonstrate your rugby skills and understanding at a pre-course training camp.

Assessment methods will include a variety of project and assignment work, essays, presentations, research projects and tests. You will also get the opportunity to complete additional qualifications, such as:

  • Rugby Leaders Award
  • WRU L1 and RFL L1
  • WRU L1 Referee and European Match Official L1 Rugby League
  • First Aid
  • Child Protection.

Learners will also train for up to 10 hours a week, whilst also competing within the WRU National Schools and Colleges League and RFL Colleges League Southern Division. If you are interested in developing your own rugby (both union and league) skills and performance, alongside the study of sport, coaching and training, then this course is the perfect fit for you.

Staying with Gower College Swansea, you could progress on to the Foundation Degree in Sports Development and Management.

Students have also progressed to Higher Education to pursue careers in teaching, coaching, sports management and the wider leisure industry.
