Sporting students head to AoC National Championships

Over 30 students from Gower College Swansea have qualified to represent the region at the AoC Sport National Championships 2017.

The students – specialising in a range of different sports including football, netball, hockey, rugby, golf, cross country and ladies football - fought off stiff competition from colleges across the UK for the chance to participate in the national finals at the University of Nottingham and surrounding facilities on 21-23 April.

The AoC Sport National Championships will see the teams competing against athletes from colleges across England and Wales. As well as individual glory, teams will be aiming to accumulate points for their region and win the prestigious Wilkinson Sword trophy.

“Our students are raring to go this year and are really looking forward to the experience,” says Curriculum Leader Marc O’Kelly. “In addition to our netball and ladies football teams, we also have our ILS football team (who won the 2016 Ability Counts national championships) attending and our players are making up the Welsh Colleges hockey and rugby teams. With a golfer and four cross country runners as well, Gower College Swansea is playing a crucial role in this tournament and we are looking forward to bringing some medals home!”

AoC Sport Managing Director, Marcus Kingwell, said: “We are really excited about this year’s National Championships, which will be hosted at state-of-the-art facilities in Nottingham.

“Ours will be the first major Multi-Sports event to take place at the David Ross Sports Village, and we believe the standard of the facilities will provide students with an incredible experience.

“We could even see a future Olympic champion in action at the Championships.”

The AoC Sport National Championships are now in their 39th year and remain the largest student sporting event in the UK, with nearly 1,800 students taking part last year. Colleges will compete in 13 different sports over a three-day period, taking place in some of the best facilities in the country.
