Pontarddulais Comprehensive pupil Rhys Thomas has been finding out more about post-school options thanks to Gower College Swansea’s Junior College programme.

Rhys, who is in Year 10, has been trying his hand - and developing an understanding of – engineering at the Tycoch campus.

“Rhys excels in the practical sessions,” says lecturer Ronald Stephens. “When working as part of a team, his confidence has developed greatly, so much so that he will naturally take the lead in tasks.”

“Through hard work and determination, Rhys has inspired his peers to succeed as well,” echoes lecturer Cathy Rogers. “He has great characteristics, an enthusiasm and passion for both school and college.”

“I am really enjoying the Engineering course in college,” adds Rhys. “I was worried at first that I would struggle with the theory but, with the support of Ron and Cathy, I’ve been able to tackle the work with confidence. This has really helped me get involved in the practical sessions where I can lead a team and solve problems.”

Rhys has also enjoyed taking part in the Motor Vehicle Saturday Club at the Tycoch campus.

“I’m considering applying for a vocational course in plumbing or motor vehicle at college,” he says. “It’s nice to have a few different options to explore after I finish school.”
