It’s medal time for College Ironman team

Congratulations to all the staff members who took part in the Ironman 2023 event on 3 September.

Collectively, our amazing GCS team raised an incredible £625.06 for the Kenya Community Education Project – smashing their original target of £500.

In preparation for the event, they trained for approximately 1,650 hours (over 250 hours of which were part of the GCS Wellbeing offer) and, on the day, they burned a total of 85,000 calories!

The following members of the GCS Ironman team successfully completed the tough triathlon event.

Access student scoops special bursary

Congratulations are in order for former Gower College Swansea student Aaliyah Wood who has been chosen as a recipient of the Peter Roberts Collab Group Bursary.

The £2,500 Bursary, which is sponsored by The Skills Network, is awarded annually to just two students in the UK who have studied at a Collab Group college and are either progressing to university or starting their own business.

Top universities beckon for talented Swansea students

Hundreds of young learners were recently invited to attend the launch of the Swansea Seren Hub for 2023/24, where they were able to find out more about the skills needed to apply to the UK’s top universities.

The event, led by Gower College Swansea and Swansea University, was held at the Great Hall on the University’s Bay Campus. It was attended by around 250 students from the College and local sixth form schools, many of whom were joined by their parents and guardians.

Six students make national finals

After an intensive round of heats, Gower College Swansea is delighted that six students have made the WorldSkills UK National Finals. They are:

Tarran Spooner, Faroz Shahrokh, Rhys Lock – Industrial Electronics
Callie Morgan – Graphic Design
Georgia Cox – Laboratory Technician
Cameron Bryant – Foundation Skills: Restaurant Services

They will now take their places alongside over 400 other talented students and apprentices at the National Finals on 14-17 November.

English students enjoy special poetry reading

In celebration of National Poetry Day on 5 October, A Level English students at Gower College Swansea were delighted to welcome poet Guinevere Clark to the Gorseinon Campus.

Guinevere’s first collection, Fresh Fruit & Screams, was published in 2006. Her work has since been seen in publications including Minerva Rising, The A3 Review, The Atlanta Review and nawr Magazine. She reached the final 10 of Ambit's International Poetry Competition in 2020 and received both Shortlisted and Highly Commended awards in The Hammond House International Literary Prize 2022.

Gower College Swansea's HR Team Wins National Award

Gower College Swansea's Human Resources (HR) team were recently honoured with the prestigious 'Best Health and Wellbeing Initiative Public/ Third Sector 2023' award by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD).

The CIPD People Management Awards are among the most respected and competitive accolades in the field of HR and people management, and this year, Gower College Swansea's HR and Wellbeing team stood out among its peers from across the UK.

UPDATE Important information re: Tycoch Campus 28 September

Further to our update last week on the identified RAAC (Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete) that is present in a small, isolated area of the Tycoch campus of Gower College Swansea, structural engineers have now completed a detailed review of the campus. 

As a result we have decided to close 2 rooms – one a classroom and one a staffroom – on the building’s D floor – whilst remedial work is undertaken.
